ORLANDO, Fla. – The College of Charleston softball team took down Omaha, 5-1, on the third and final day of the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic.
On the strength of two home runs and a sacrifice fly, the Cougars (4-5) closed out the tournament with a victory. The Mavericks (4-6) were stymied by the combination of Samantha Martin and Sydney Shipley, who threw seven complete innings and allowed only four hits.
Charleston senior first basemen and team captain Chandler Frisbie also made her first start of the season after missing eight games due to an injury. She recorded a sacrifice fly RBI.
“Coming back feels great,” Frisbie said. “It feels amazing (to get a win). I take a lot of pride in trying to be a vocal leader and a rock for our team on-and-off the field. It was definitely awesome to actually be out there on the field and contribute to the win today.”
Highlights
The action started in the top of the third inning when Kelly Sinclair booted a solo home run, her first of the season, giving CofC a 1-0 lead.
One inning later, Rebecca Mueller hit her first home run of the season for CofC - a two run blast that brought home Dana Horgan and Jordin Jones. Frisbie recorded her RBI off a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
Omaha added a run of its own in the bottom of the fifth inning, but could not manage any more. Sydney Shipley (1-2) shut the door and earned her first win as a Cougar by pitching her best game of the season. She ended her five innings of work with two strikeouts and only one walk.
In the top of the seventh inning, Sinclair popped her second hit, a double, down the right field line. She brought home two batters later with a base hit by Dana Horgan.
