BLACKSBURG, Va. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team dropped its contest against No. 46-ranked Virginia Tech, 7-0.
The Cougars (5-3) entered the match with some momentum after sweeping North Carolina A&T, 7-0, on Sunday, but the Hokies (6-2) proved their metal.
“We came out with better intensity than we had in the previous few matches," CofC Head Coach Jay Bruner said. "They simply were too tough, but we are excited to move past this match and play at home on Sunday.”
Bruner played at Virginia Tech, where he graduated in 2001, and was excited about the opportunity to play against his alma mater.
“It was cool to see my old coach (Jim Thompson) and see how good of a job he still does with his players," Bruner said. “I learned a lot of things from him.”
On the court, CofC's Charlie Ghriskey took four games in the first set against Mitch Harper of Va. Tech at No. 4 singles, before ultimately falling in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Reigning CAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week Juan Estevarena gave Joao Monteiro a run for his money at No. 1 singles, but fell short, 6-3, 6-1.
Up next, The College comes back home to host Appalachian State on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 12 noon at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
