MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Senior outfielder Rebecca Mueller recorded two hits on Sunday, as the College of Charleston softball team fell to Michigan State, 4-1, in its final game of the weekend at the Holy City Showdown at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (13-10) recorded six hits on the day, including the two off of the bat of Mueller, who has now recorded at least two hits in 11 games this season. Kelly Sinclair saw her ten game hitting streak broken against the Spartans (14-10), but Carly Hansis reached base for the tenth consecutive game after recording a single in the seventh inning.
Michigan State scored three runs in the top of the second inning, but Charleston had a number of opportunities to challenge the Spartan lead. The College scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning after a throwing error by the Spartan shortstop allowed Mueller to advance home. Michigan State recorded four errors against the Cougars, and although CofC had a total of 11 players reach base, ten of those runners were left on base; Charleston's second highest total this season.
Sydney Shipley relieved the starter, Samantha Martin (7-4), in the fifth inning and threw three innings, allowing only one hit and one walk. Martin threw the first four innings and was unable to prevent the Spartans from racking up four runs on four hits and a walk.
