NEWARK, Del. – Sara Garcia extended her on-base streak to 10 games, as the College of Charleston softball team fell to Delaware, 5-0, in the first game of the three-game weekend series.
The College (19-11) entered the contest on a six-game winning streak, having won each of their games last week. Against Delaware (15-10), each of the nine starters for Charleston were able to reach base, including runs by seven different Cougars, and a total of three walks between Kelly Sinclair's one, and Sara Garcia's two. Unfortunately, those base runners where spread out between each of the seven innings, and The College stranded a total of 11 runners on base, as it was unable to take advantage of its opportunities
Carly Hansis lead the Cougars with two hits and now has four such games on the season. Taylor DuPree extended her hitting streak to eight games, and Rebecca Mueller hit her team-leading 10th double of the season against the Blue Hens.
Pitcher Samantha Martin (11-5) started for the College, and faced an uphill battle from the beginning. She allowed a walk, and then a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, and another two-run blast in the bottom of the fourth before Valerie Cassell came in to relieve her. Cassell tossed 2.1 innings, and struck out two in that time, while only allowing one walk and two hits, but no runs.
