MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C.– The College of Charleston softball head coach, Linda Kalafatis, earned her 900th career win as the Cougars took down the Tigers, 3-2, in the rubber match of the series.
Kalafatis is in her third season as head coach at the College of Charleston, and her 27th season overall. Her career record now stands at 900-541-2, and she is now the 16th active Division 1 head coach to reach the 900 wins mark. Over her career, Kalafatis has moved up the record books and ranks in the top 40 in victories as a Division 1 head coach, top-50 in all-time winning percentage, and top-50 in all-time victories across all NCAA divisions.
“I never want the game or a season to be about me, but it was really cool to see how excited every one was for me today, and I'm just happy that I've been able to do what I love for as long as I have” Kalafatis said.
While the milestone was an extremely exciting moment, the game that earned her the milestone was just as entertaining. Rebecca Mueller and Dana Horgan each recorded two hits, and Valerie Cassell drew three walks, as Charleston (28-21, 6-9) was able to get up early, and hold on to the lead late to pick up a much-needed win in CAA play.
The Cougars opened up the action with two runs in the bottom of the second inning on four consecutive hits. Two walks then loaded the bases for CofC with two outs in the inning, and it could not manage to bring any more runners home. On the day, Charleston stranded 11 runners on base for the sixth time this season.
Towson would respond and tie the game with a two-run home run off the bat of Brook Miko. The Tigers did not hold that lead for long though, as the Cougars scored what would be the game-deciding run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Chandler Frisbie RBI single, her ninth of the season.
Junior pitcher Samantha Martin started her 26 game of the season for Charleston, and pitched 3.2 innings before being relieved by Valerie Cassell in the fourth inning. Cassell pitched 2.1 innings, and struck out 2 en route to picking up her sixth win in 2016. Martin would return in the seventh inning to close the game, and earned her second save of the season, and the seventh of her career.
