CONWAY, S.C. – Taylor DuPree stole four bases and Kashmir Huckaby hit two home runs on the day, as the College of Charleston softball team dropped each of its games on Wednesday in a double-header against Coastal Carolina, 8-4, and, 7-2.
Between both games there was a total of 10 home runs, two of which were courtesy of Huckaby, and another came off of Jordin Jones' bat. Kelly Sinclair recorded four hits on the day, and the Cougars struck out 10 batters between both games.
“We didn't play our best games, clearly, but I think there are some positives that you can still pull from this” Head coach Linda Kalafatis said. “It was good to see some girls get some game action and see how they compete.”
Game 1: Coastal Carolina 8, Charleston 4
The 3 p.m. matchup saw freshmen Canyon Crosby and Jordan Barcus start in their first career games for The College. Taylor DuPree drew two walks and recorded one hit, allowing her the opportunity to steal two bases, which lead all batters. Jordin Jones and Kashmir Huckaby each added a home run for Charleston; Huckaby's was her first home run as a Cougar.
The College took the lead early with one run in the top of the first, but surrendered that lead in the bottom of the first with three Chanticleer runs. The College scored one run in four separate innings, but could not string together the hits needed to overtake Coastal Carolina.
Canyon Crosby made her first pitching appearance, and threw a complete six-inning game for Charleston. She struck out three batters, and allowed only two walks.
Game 2: Coastal Carolina 7, Charleston 2
The twilight matchup saw Charleston trot out its top pitcher, Samantha Martin, against the Chanticleers. Martin would pitch a complete six-inning game, striking out seven and allowing only one walk.
Offensively, the second game looked similar to the first, as Kelly Sinclair led all Charleston batters with two hits, Taylor DuPree reached base three times again, once on a hit, twice via drawn walks, and she stole two bases. Kashmir Huckaby also repeated her performance, as she smashed another solo home run.
Coastal Carolina got up on The College early, scoring six of its seven runs in the first three innings, and never gave Charleston the chance to get back in it. CofC came up with too-little-too-late, as it scored each of its runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
