HARRISONBURG, Va. – Sara Garcia hit a solo homer in the top of the sixth inning, and Jordin Jones recorded two hits and an RBI, as the College of Charleston softball team fell to Towson, 7-3, in their first contest in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament.
The Cougars (33-22, 11-9) opened the game with a two run burst in the top of the first. CofC loaded the bases, with sophomore Taylor DuPree on third, and then a wild pitch allowed her to advance home. Jordin Jones followed that up with an RBI single that drove senior Rebecca Mueller home.
Charleston's lead would be short lived though, as it allowed five runs in the bottom of the first, including a four-run grand slam off of the bat of Towson's Holiday Cahill. Towson added another run in the bottom of the second and fifth innings as well, owning a 7-2 lead though five complete innings.
Sara Garcia then did her best to change the momentum, as she blasted a solo homer to lead off the sixth inning, but the Cougars couldn't manage the rally.
Valerie Cassell came in to relieve Sam Martin in the top of the second inning, and tossed five complete innings of work. She struck out five, and allowed only two hits and two runs, only one of which was earned.
