Cougars Fall to Towson in CAA Tournament Semifinals

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The College of Charleston dropped its semifinal matchup with No. 2 seeded Towson, 12-1, as they fall one game short of a CAA Championship game berth.
Sara Garcia and Rebecca Mueller were named to the All-CAA tournament team for their efforts over the week. Garcia lead CofC in batting with six hits on 12 at-bats, and five walks. She hit two home runs, two doubles, and a triple, driving in six runs between the four games. Mueller batted for a .333 average, with one double and two drawn walks.
The Cougars finish the season with a record of 35-23, and 11-9 in conference play. They made their farthest trip into the CAA tournament since joining the conference. 35 wins is the seventh most in a single season in program history, and the second highest total in head Coach Linda Kalafatis' career at The College.
“We just ran out of gas.” Kalafatis said after the game “We played four tough games, and overcame a lot of obstacles this week, but we didn't finish.”
Towson lead off the game with a solo home run in the first at-bat of the game, but Charleston would tie the game back up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. CofC loaded the bases with a single, an error, and a walk, and then Jordin Jones drove in the run on a sacrifice fly to right field.
The tie was short lived though, as the Tigers took control of the game in the top of the second with an eight run inning thanks to six hits and three walks. When the dust settled, Towson lead by eight, leaving the Cougars in a tough position. Towson added three more runs in the top of the fourth, and the game ended in a run-ruling after the fifth inning.
On the day, The Cougars managed only three hits, but they did draw four walks as well. As a team, CofC left eight runners on base in the losing effort.
The Cougars pitching staff had a hard time figuring out the Towson lineup, and saw all four regular pitchers see action. Sydney Shipley started the game, and went 1.1 innings, and allowed only two hits. She walk three though, and was replaced by Valerie Cassell in the second inning. Cassell had an even more difficult time, allowing four hits and five runs before being supplanted by Samantha Martin in the second. Martin went 2.1 innings, and gave way to Brittany Violette in the top of the fifth.
