Â
With the win, College of Charleston evens its overall record at 16-16 while remaining atop the CAA standings with a 7-2 mark in league play. The loss drops James Madison to 17-13 overall and 3-6 in CAA action.
Â
The Cougars plated 12 runs on 15 hits and eight walks, compared to 11 tallies on 12 base knocks and five free passes for the Dukes. Charleston recorded a season-high four stolen bases – including two from Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.).
Â
Mundy and Richter each recorded a trio of hits, while Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.) reached base five times via three walks and a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. Roper tied a career-high with four RBIs and recorded the first triple of his collegiate career; Mundy, Bradley Dixon (Greenwood, S.C.), and Ari Sechopoulos (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) each drove in two runs.
Â
Jakob Frishmuth (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) went five innings to pick up his second collegiate win, while Carter Love (Charlotte, N.C.) struck out four in three no-hit frames for his second save of the season.
Â
Ky Parrott paced the Dukes' offense with two hits – including a home run – and four RBIs, while Fox Semones went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Brett Johnson and Kyle McPherson each picked up two base knocks.
Â
James Madison starter Josh Silvestri lasted three and one-third innings while allowing five runs on seven hits in a losing effort. Tucker McCoy surrendered five runs in one frame of work, while Michael Evans tossed two shutout innings late.
Â
The Cougars jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with one in the first and two in the second, including a two-run single from Mundy in the second. A two-run fourth would push the advantage to 5-0 following an RBI single from Manzo. After Parrott homered to lead off the JMU, Johnson singled home McPherson to cut the margin to 5-2.
Â
Charleston would answer with a six-run fifth to push the lead to 11-2 – an inning capped by a bases-clearing, two-out triple down the first base line by Roper. James Madison began to rally in the home half, with two runs on back-to-back RBI groundouts to trim the margin to 11-4.
Â
The Dukes continued the comeback effort with a six-run inning of their own in the sixth, as Semones, Zach Tondi, and Ryan Coale each tallied RBI singles before Parrott capped the frame with a two-run double to center to cut the lead to 11-10.
Â
The teams would trade runs in the seventh, as Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) plated Hart with an infield single before a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch answered for the Dukes in the home half. Both sides stranded two in the eighth – including a pair in scoring position for the Cougars – before Love retired the side in order in the JMU ninth to seal the nail-biting victory.
Â
The Cougars will return to the diamond on Wednesday when they make the short trek to North Charleston to face in-town foe Charleston Southern at 6:00 pm.
