MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- Tommy Richter (Wayne, Pa.) and Riley Knudsen (Cabot, Ark.) each homered and drove in two runs, and Griffin McLarty (Buckner, Ky.) limited CSU Bakersfield to one run in five and one-third innings to lead the College of Charleston baseball team to a 7-3 win on Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point.
With the win, College of Charleston (12-3) is off to the second-best 15-game start in program history. The 2011 Cougars started the season 13-2 to set the school-record. Charleston pushed across seven runs on nine hits – including four for extra bags – on Saturday, while holding CSU Bakersfield (6-10) to two earned runs on seven base knocks.
Richter, Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.), and Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) each picked up two hits on the day, with Richter clubbing his first home run of the season – a solo shot – while also driving in another run with a single. Knudsen started the scoring with a two-run shot to right in the fourth, as McRae, Luke Morgan (New Lenox, Ill.), and Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.) each drove in one.
McLarty struck out six and surrendered one run on three hits in five and one-third innings to pick up his third win of the season. Nathan Ocker (Middletown, Pa.) recorded two outs in the sixth, as Carter Love (Charlotte, N.C.) pitched two innings while allowing his first run of the campaign. Clay Hunt (Fort Mill, S.C.) allowed one unearned run in the ninth to close out the win for the Cougars.
Andrew Penner, Jake Ortega, Alec Daily, Jared Toothman, Austyn Tengan, and Evan Berkey each collected a hit for the Roadrunners, as Toothman, Penner, and Noah Barba were all credited with an RBI. Davonte Butler surrendered four earned runs over five innings to take the loss, while Jordan Ragan allowed two runs in three innings of work.
The Cougars will go for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 pm, with Jakob Frishmuth (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) taking the ball opposite CSU Bakersfield junior Ben Cutting.
