Weekend Preview
The Cougars and Phoenix meet for the 52nd time on Friday, with CofC leading the all-time series, 31-20. Charleston took 3-of-4 in the season series last spring, including a 1-0 win in the CAA Tournament despite being held without a hit in the contest.
Last Time Out
The Cougars bolstered their postseason resume with an 11-4 win over No. 20 Coastal Carolina on Tuesday evening. Clay Hunt struck out a career-high 11 batters without allowing a hit in six and one-third innings, and Logan McRae tied a personal-best with five RBIs in a 3-for-4 effort to pace the offense.
Hunt-ing K's
Junior Clay Hunt delivered his most dominant pitching performance as a Cougar on Tuesday with a career-high 11 strikeouts - seven more than his previous best - in six and one-third hitless innings to earn the win against No. 20 Coastal Carolina. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound right-hander threw 81 pitches, including 57 for strikes, while allowing just two Chanticleers to reach base - one via a walk and one via an error.
Lethal Table-Setters
Dupree Hart, Luke Morgan, Logan McRae, and Danny Wondrack have been nothing short of superb as the top four hitters in the Cougar batting order this season, entering the weekend with a combined slash line of .345/.410/.585 through the first 26 games to go along with 18 home runs, 74 RBIs and 86 runs scored. The quartet have accounted for 62 percent of the Cougars' home runs, and 53 percent of CofC's total hits in only 46 percent of the team's at-bats thus far.
Commanding the Zone
The Cougars' pitching staff continues to set the national standard in painting the black and challenging opposing hitters while limiting base runners, and entered the week leading Division I in walks allowed per nine innings for the second straight week. Despite surrendering seven walks on Tuesday to Coastal Carolina, Charleston remains firmly in the national lead with an average of 2.29 walks per nine - more than two-tenths fewer than second-place Louisiana Tech's average.
Scouting Elon
Elon enters the weekend riding a three-game winning streak following a 10-9 win over Wake Forest on Tuesday. The Phoenix rank fourth in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings with an average of 10.8 K's per nine.
Ryne Ogren paces the Phoenix offense, batting .368 with six doubles, one home run, and 24 RBIs, while Cam Devanney has clubbed a team-high four homers. Friday starter Kyle Brnovich ranks second in the nation with 61 strikeouts, and enters the weekend with a 3-0 record and a 1.59 ERA in six starts.
