Cougars Face Dukes for First CAA Match of 2018
3/30/2018 5:39:00 PM | Men's Tennis
CHARLESTON, S.C. – With all of their home matches for the season now behind them, the College of Charleston men's tennis team (7-8) heads out on the road for the remainder of the regular season, beginning with a Saturday encounter against James Madison (13-5) at noon.
CofC comes off its first 7-0 sweep of The Citadel since 2014 after the Cougars defeated the Bulldogs on Thursday night for senior day. Ryan Kahn celebrated his Patriots Point swan song by winning his first-ever spring doubles match in the maroon and white, and went on to pick up a two-set win in singles play as well.
The Cougars have historically done very well against the Dukes, boasting a 6-0 record against the men from Harrisonburg since joining the CAA. The two teams' only meeting last year came in the opening round of the CAA Tournament, where the College was able to dispatch JMU 4-0. The score could possibly have been much more lopsided than that, as Juan Estevarena, Vasily Kichigin and Rodrigo Encinas all led their matches when play was halted.
This season, the Dukes have reached the 13-win threshold for just the third time in the past decade, and are in the midst of their best season in recent memory. However, momentum will not be on their side, as James Madison has dropped three of their last four against William & Mary, Longwood and UNCW. Paul Mendoza, Alvaro Arce Garcia and Theophile Lanthiez have all reached twelve wins in singles play this season, representing flights one, two and five respectively.
