Late Surge Lifts Pride Over Cougars In Series Opener

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. --- The Hofstra Pride pounced for three runs in the sixth, and four in the eighth to rally for a 7-1 victory over the College of Charleston baseball team on Friday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association play.
With the setback, College of Charleston (27-12, 9-4 CAA) drops its third straight game for the first time this season and falls into second place in the CAA standings. Hofstra (15-15, 5-8 CAA) pushed across seven runs on eight hits and five walks, while limiting the Cougars to one tally on five base knocks.
Luke Morgan (New Lenox, Ill.) drove in the Cougars' lone run with a first-inning single, which scored Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.) from second. Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) collected his team-leading 12th double of the season, while Bradley Dixon (Greenwood, S.C.), Clay Hunt (Fort Mill, S.C.), and Tommy Richter (Wayne, Pa.) each recorded a single.
Evan Sisk (Chester, S.C.) surrendered three runs on five hits and struck out five in six innings to move to 7-3 on the season. Justin Baker (Huntersville, N.C.) pitched a perfect seventh with a strikeout. Kris Kuhn (Summerville, S.C.) and Christian Shiver (Monroe, Ga.) combined to allow four runs on three hits and two walks in the eighth, as Shiver tallied three strikeouts.
Vito Friscia went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the way for Hofstra. Austin Gauthier drove in two with a single in the sixth, and Rob Weissheier plated three with a bases-loaded double in the eighth. John Rooney tossed a complete game to pick up his sixth win of the season, allowing one unearned run on five hits and striking out seven.
The Cougars and Pride will meet in game two of the weekend series on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm. Griffin McLarty (Buckner, Ky.) is slated to take the ball opposite Hofstra senior Matt Weissheier.
