HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. --- The Hofstra Pride scored twice in the fifth, and held off a ninth-inning rally by the College of Charleston baseball team to edge the Cougars, 2-1, on Saturday to secure the series win in Colonial Athletic Association play.
The setback marks the fourth straight loss for College of Charleston, as the Cougars fall to 27-13 overall and 9-5 in CAA action. Hofstra (16-15, 6-8 CAA) managed two runs on 10 hits, while holding CofC to a single tally on six base knocks. The Cougars stranded nine base runners in the contest compared to eight for the Pride.
K.J. Bryant (Taylors, S.C.) went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, while Luke Morgan (New Lenox, Ill.) reached base three times with a single and two walks. Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.) drove in the Cougars' lone run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Griffin McLarty (Buckner, Ky.) pitched well enough to win, holding the Pride to two runs – one earned – on eight hits and striking out seven in five and two-thirds innings. Carter Love (Charlotte, N.C.) struck out two and surrendered two hits in two and one-third scoreless frames.
Three Hofstra hitters recorded multi-hit days, as Mike Reisner went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Daniel Page collected two hits and scored one run in three at-bats, while Vito Friscia went 2-for-4 with a double. Matt Weissheier scattered three hits and two walks across six and one-third shutout innings to earn the win. Chris Weiss picked up the save, allowing one run on three hits and striking out four in two and two-thirds innings.
The Cougars and Pride will meet in game three of the weekend series on Sunday at 12:00 pm, with Jakob Frishmuth (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) getting the start opposite Hofstra senior Michael James.
