Jacksonville, Fla. – Izzy Berouty tossed a four-hit shutout and was backed by a three-run uprising in the fourth as the College of Charleston blanked Northern Iowa, 4-0, in the opening game of the Osprey/Dolphin Classic.
Noel Dominguez and Yari Felix drove in runs in the decisive frame as the Cougars won for the fifth time in six games, the second-best start in six seasons under head coach Linda Kalafatis. Charleston began the 2017 campaign with six consecutive victories.
Berouty did not walk a batter and retired 18 of 19 Panthers between the first and sixth innings in posting her fourth career shutout. The junior right hander, who needed only 79 pitches in her 19th career complete game, is 2-1 and lowered her ERA to a team-best 1.31, allowing only three earned runs over 16 innings to start the season.
It was scoreless through three before Lexee Emanuel singled to lead off the fourth and scored on a base hit by Dominguez, the freshman third baseman's second straight game with an RBI. Dexlie Inman doubled to put two in scoring position, and Felix drove both in with a single to left. Felix also snagged a drive over the fence in center to rob Sammey Bunch of a home run in the sixth.
The Cougars added a run in the fifth on a single by Gracyn Thrasher, double by Emanuel and sacrifice fly by Madi Brown. Meanwhile, Berouty was mowing down the Panthers, retiring the final three batters in the first and the side in order the next three innings. She worked around a pair of singles to lead off the seventh to preserve the shutout, aided by an unassisted double play on a liner to Kelly Sinclair at short that ended the game.
The Cougars play twice tomorrow, taking on UNI again at 2:00 and co-host North Florida at 7:00.
