Harrisonburg, Va. – The third time proved to be the charm for the College of Charleston in extra innings as the Cougars downed Drexel, 7-5, in the opening game of the CAA Tournament on Wednesday.
The Cougars (26-28) took leads in three of the four extra frames before making RBI hits by freshmen Savannah Huff and Ginna Leaphart the stand up in the 11th, setting the stage for a game against host and top-seed James Madison later this afternoon.
Kelly Sinclair and Dexlie Inman singled with one out in the 11th, and Huff followed with a drive to the gap in right center to chase home Sinclair and give the Cougars the lead for good. Leaphart singled home Inman in a pinch-hitting role for an insurance run.
Izzy Berouty, who worked the final six innings in relief, stranded two runners in the bottom of the 11th to pick up her ninth win of the season. Berouty, who was named the CAA Pitcher of the Week after gaining a win and two saves in a sweep of UNCW last weekend, allowed five hits and only one earned run.
Charleston scored single runs in the ninth and 10th on RBI singles by Sinclair and Madi Brown, but the Dragons (30-26-1) were able to tie it in their half of the inning both times. Inman had three hits for the Cougars while Sinclair, Brown and Yari Felix each had two.
Inman's double was the only hit in a three-run sixth that produced a 3-1 lead, with the Cougars taking advantage of three walks, two hit batters and a wild pitch. Drexel tied it in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer by Linda Rush, extending her CAA season record to 21.
Summer Jenkins went the first five innings in the circle and allowed five hits and three runs while striking out four.
