CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston baseball team will open the 2020 season with a split series featuring two games against Iona and a Sunday matinee against Maryland this weekend at Patriots Point. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Weekend Preview
The Cougars open the season with a split series featuring two games against Iona on Friday and Saturday followed by a Sunday matinee against Maryland. The Gaels went 14-38 last season and are picked to finish ninth in the MAAC Preseason Poll. Maryland compiled a 24-24 overall record last season and a 12-12 mark in Big Ten play.
Scouting Iona
Iona finished ninth in the MAAC last season with an 8-16 record in conference play and returns All-MAAC Second Team honoree Stephen Hansen to anchor the rotation as the Gaels' Friday night starters. Sam Punzi led the Gaels in batting average, OPS and runs batted in last season.
Senior left-hander Mario Ferraiolli returns from injury alongside 2019 MAAC All-Rookie selection Hunter Sibley, who is expected to slot in as the Gaels' No. 2 starter.
Scouting Maryland
The Terps finished the 2019 season with a 24-24 overall record and posted a 12-12 mark in Big Ten play. Head coach Rob Vaughn enters his third season with a veteran roster featuring 14 upperclassmen and three returning All-Big Ten selections.
Junior Randy Bedner clubbed 12 home runs and led the Terps with 55 RBIs last season to earn All-Big Ten honors while sophomore Maxwell Costes launched a team-high 15 homers in a stellar freshman campaign.
Game Promotions
On Friday, the first 100 fans will receive a free seat cushion at the entrance. Schedule posters will be available for fans all weekend long.
Once again, fans will be able to play Baseball Bingo throughout each home game. Fans can win prizes for single Bingo, "C" bingo, and full card bingo.
Strikeouts are brought to you by the Kickin' Chicken. If the Cougars record 10 or more strikeouts, one fan will take home $25 in Kickin' Chicken cash.
Preseason Accolades
Senior reliever Josh Price was the lone Cougar to receive Preseason All-CAA recognition after posted a 7-5 record with a 3.33 earned run average in a league-best 33 appearances. Price's 33 appearances last season also tied him with former Cougar great Brett Harker for the program's single-season record.
Youthful Exuberance
With 16 freshmen and five sophomores, underclassmen comprise more than 60 percent of the Cougars' 2020 roster giving Charleston one of the youngest squads in both the CAA and the nation.
