Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – The College of Charleston finished off a 5-0 weekend on Sunday with a 3-0 victory over Campbell in the final game of the Holy City Showdown at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (10-9) got 4.1 innings of two-hit shutout relief from Chandler Sparkman, and the pitching staff allowed a total of only three runs in the five victories to lower the team ERA to a season-best 3.17. Charleston has won eight of its last 10 to climb above the .500 mark for the first time this season.
Sparkman entered with the bases loaded in the third and recorded a strikeout to strand all three runners. Shortstop Jenna Carter prevented what could have been a big Camel inning when she dove to her left to field a grounder and tagged second for a crucial force play.
Charleston got three straight two-out hits in the fourth to break a scoreless tie. Noel Dominguez reached on an infield single and came home when a bullet to center off the bat of Lexee Emanuel rolled all the way to the fence. An RBI single by Alondra Vicary capped the two-run inning.
The Cougars added an insurance run in the fifth when Dexlie Inman singled, stole second and came home on a single to right by Brittany Vicary. Campbell threatened in the seventh on a single and walk with two outs, but Sparkman's fifth strikeout wrapped up the win.
The Cougars are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Columbia for a single game against South Carolina at 6 p.m.
