Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – The College of Charleston jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning but could not dent the scoreboard the rest of the way in a 6-1 loss to Georgia Southern on Wednesday at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (10-10) saw their five-game winning streak snapped while the Eagles improved to 14-10.
Brittany Vicary led off the game with a walk and stole second before a double by
Noel Dominguez put the Cougars in front. Georgia Southern matched the run in the second and took control with three more in the third.
Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Charleston got a one-out double from
Dexlie Inman and an infield single by
Jenna Carter. Vicary followed with a hard line drive that carried directly to Eagle right fielder Ellington Day, whose catch thwarted a potential rally.
Summer Jenkins came in to pitch in the fifth and did not allow an earned run in 2.1 innings of relief. Aaliyah Garcia fanned 10 in a four-hit complete game for the Eagles.
Charleston is back in action on Friday with games against UNCG at 4 and Fordham at 6:15 on the first day of the Cougar Classic at Patriots Point.
