CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The fourth-seeded College of Charleston baseball team will take on top-seeded Northeastern in the winner's bracket on Thursday afternoon following the Cougars' 6-5 walk-off win over Towson in game one of the 2021 CAA Baseball Championship on Wednesday. First pitch between the Cougars and Huskies is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon at Brooks Field in Wilmington, N.C.
Game Preview
The fourth-seeded Cougars and top-seeded Huskies meet for the 20th time on Thursday and the first time since the CAA foes squared off in the 2019 CAA Tournament in Harrisonburg, Va.
Scouting Northeastern
Northeastern finished the regular season with a 32-9 record and won the CAA North Division with a 20-3 mark in league play. The Huskies are batting .299 as a team with 40 home runs and 109 stolen bases as a team.
Redshirt sophomore Jared Dupere was named the CAA Player of the Year on Tuesday after batting .355 with 17 home runs and 42 RBI during the regular season. Thursday starter and redshirt freshman Cam Schlittler garnered CAA Co-Rookie of the Year accolades after posting a 7-0 record and a 1.29 ERA with 74 strikeouts in 63 innings pitched.
Last Time Out
The Cougars walked off with a 6-5 win in a dramatic back-and-forth affair with fifth-seeded Towson on Wednesday afternoon. Tanner Steffy reached base four times in a 3-for-3 effort with a two-run homer to pace the offense.
Slammin' Cougars
The Cougars have thrived with the bases loaded this season launching a single-season program-record eight grand slams thus far. Senior outfielder Harrison Hawkins has hit three slams this season which is also an individual single-season record; Ari Sechopoulos and Tanner McCallister each have two grand slams this season.
Turning Two
Charleston's defense has excelled at the double play ball this spring entering the CAA Championship ranked seventh in the nation and first in the league with 46 twin-killings through 47 games. The Cougars also rank sixth nationally with an average of 0.98 double plays per game.
