ELON, N.C. – Carli McCants concluded an outstanding season by allowing only five hits in a complete game effort but came out on the short end of a 1-0 pitcher's duel against Elon, eliminating the College of Charleston from the CAA Tournament.
McCants, making her final career appearance, allowed two hits in the first inning before helping her own cause by starting a 1-6-3 double play. She gave up just three hits the rest of the way, but one of them was a two-out RBI double by Megan Grant in the fifth that produced the game's lone run.
Charleston had several scoring chances, taking advantage of four walks, an error and a single by Payton Wade to put two runners on base in each of the first three innings. The Cougars got the leadoff batter on base five times but stranded 10 runners in ending their season at 15-37.
Noel Dominguez and Shealyn Starks also had hits against Elon pitcher Isley Duggins, who was able to work around her wildness (six walks) to keep the Cougars off the board.
