Cougars, Seahawks Renew Rivalry This Weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston returns to the hardwood this weekend as rival UNCW comes to town for a CAA volleyball weekend.
 
Both sides enter fresh off a weekend split with Charleston taking a match at Delaware and UNCW taking one versus CAA newcomer Campbell. Sunday's loss was the first inside league play for UNCW after the Seahawks set a program record with their 5-0 start. They enter tied atop the standings with four-time champion Towson and Northeastern.
 
Charleston has owned the rivalry as of late taking the last four installments and 12 of the previous 13 meetings. The Cougars lead the series 28-11 overall, 15-3 in the City of Charleston, are 5-0 in their last five played inside TD Arena and lead the postseason matchups 2-1.

Charleston earned its second straight weekend split, going 1-1 against Delaware. The Cougars topped the Blue Hens in four sets before dropping a five-set match. Tynley Smeltzer averaged 5.56 digs per set, continuing a torrid stretch. She totaled 50 digs, with 25 in each match. Smeltzer has at least 20 digs in five of the past six contests.  Sopheea Mink paced Charleston with 29 kills (3.22/set) on a .431 hitting percentage. She reached double figures in both contests, including a career-best 16 in the weekend finale.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
 
UNCW (8-8, 5-1 CAA) went 1-1 against Campbell over the weekend. The setback was the first for the Seahawks in league play. The 5-0 start in CAA play was the best for UNCW in program history.  UNCW enters the weekend in a three-way tie for first in the CAA with four-time champion Towson and Northeastern.
 
Katie Lanz paced UNCW with 37 kills (4.11/set), adding 30 digs (3.33/set). Lanz recorded her second double-double this season with 21 kills and 22 digs in the victory. Lanz has 10-plus kills in three straight matches and eight this fall and paces the Seahawk attack with 3.30 kills/set in CAA play.
 
Jadyn Berry tallied 42 digs (4.67/set) and reached double figures in both contests. Berry has at least 10 digs in eight consecutive matches. She paces the backline with 4.70 digs/set in conference matches second to only Charleston's Tynley Smeltzer.

  • Admission is free of charge for all College of Charleston volleyball matches at TD Arena.
  • Gates will open one hour prior to first serve of the opening match each day.
  • College of Charleston's clear bag policy is in effect for all matches played at TD Arena this fall. The full policy can be found here.
  • There is no designated general parking area for games at TD Arena. There are various parking garages and paid lots in the vicinity of TD Arena that all spectators can utilize.
  • Alcohol will be available for purchase at all CofC volleyball matches this fall with last call prior to the third set of the final match each day.
