MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's basketball team snapped three-game skid behind 17 three-pointer in a 80-72 win over Coastal Carolina to close out the Myrtle Beach Invitational.
Ante Brzovic scored the Cougars' first eight points of the afternoon on back-to-back threes and a jumper in the paint to take an early 8-4 edge.
Charleston took their largest of the half at 36-28 with just over two minutes until the half. An offensive surge from Coastal Carolina closed the gap as Charleston held a one-point 36-35 edge entering the locker room.
The Cougars made eight threes in the first half, topping their season-high before the frame was over.
Reyne Smith led Charleston with 11 points at the break including three from deep.
The Chanticleers went on a 9-0 run to open the second half until another Smith three brought the Cougars back within four at 44-40. Three-straight triples from Smith, Brzovic and
Frankie Policelli helped swing the momentum back in favor of the Cougars with a
Mayar Wol dagger tied the contest at 57-57.
Bryce Butler worked through the Chanticleer's defense to give Charleston their first lead since the half at 59-57. The teams traded points until 13-0 run for the Cougars sparked by three consecutive Policelli triples and an emphatic dunk by
James Scott gave Charleston a ten-point lead to ride to a 80-72 victory.
KEY COUGARS
- Smith drained a season-high six threes and 24 total points, the most by a Cougar this season. Policelli added five from behind the arc for 17 points.
- Brzovic notched his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
GAME NOTES
- Charleston's 17 threes are the most for the program this season and the most since the program made 18 at Elon on February 16, 2023.
- The Cougars won the rebounding battle 42-41and dished out a season-high 20 assists, led by CJ Fulton with six.
- The Cougars bench contributed 25 points compared to the Chanticleers 16.
- Charleston has now won 33 total contests over Coastal Carolina in program history.
