CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston looks to bounce back after a series loss to No. 14 Virginia Tech last weekend to open the 2023 season. The Cougars got strong starts from both Ty Good and Trey Pooser to open the series, but Virginia Tech's potent offense came alive towards the end of the weekend for the series win.
The Cougars host UMBC for just the second time in program history and first since the 1999 season - a single game matchup the Retrievers took 7-6. The weekend series is the second-straight season the Cougars host an opponent from the America East Conference after taking a 2-1 series over UMass-Lowell in 2022.
Senior ace Ty Good was named the CAA Co-Pitcher of the Week Feb. 20 after tossing 5.0 innings of shutout, one-hit baseball and striking out six in CofC's 5-2 win over No. 14 Virginia Tech.
UMBC comes into the weekend 0-1 as they opened their season with a 22-11 loss at Delaware Feb. 21. The Retrievers posted five early runs but were unable to hold off the Blue Hens.
