Charleston Heads to New Jersey for Series with CAA Newcomer Monmouth

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston hits the road for the first three of a five-game road swing as CAA newcomer Monmouth awaits. Friday's series opener marks the first meeting between the two programs, the third opponent on Charleston's schedule with zero prior meetings (Air Force and Longwood). Charleston is 3-0 against first-time opponents in 2023 sweeping a midweek series versus Longwood and slugging past Air Force.

Charleston comes in winners in three of their last four - all coming at home - taking a weekend series over Hofstra and shutting out Holy City rival Charleston Southern Tuesday night.

Monmouth enters the weekend rested comparatively speaking as the weather last weekend allowed just one of the three scheduled with North Carolina A&T to happen. The Hawks won that solo contest 2-0 in Greensboro and have won three of four dating back to a midweek sweep of NJIT and Saint Peter's.

Charleston looks to grab a fifth series win in six tries against CAA foes with their only series loss coming at Delaware to open April.

Scouting the Hawks

Monmouth comes in winners in three of their last four taking the only game of a scheduled three-game series at North Carolina A&T and sweeping a pair of midweeks over Saint Peter's and NJIT.
The Hawks have seen each of the current top-three CAA teams and four of the top-five already dropping all of their series to this point. Charleston sits fourth in the CAA standings entering play this weekend and are the fifth league foe with a winning record the Hawks will have faced.
Monmouth is hitting .279 as a club and have struck out the fewest number of times but have hit the fifth-most home runs in the CAA (26) and sit fifth in slugging percentage (.418).
Phil Stahl leads the Monmouth offense with a slash line of .413/.480/.558 with a team-best four long balls and 32 RBI. Stahl has also walked 16 times and only struck out 13 starting all 28 games played.
Six Hawks have tossed at least 20 innings of work this season led by Dante Ciaramella's 33 frames and 4.09 ERA. As a team Monmouth has a 9.00 ERA and 2.06 WHIP and .321 opponents' batting average.
Monmouth's three wins in CAA play came in the finale at UNCW (7-4), middle game of the William & Mary series (14-12) and in the lone contest played with North Carolina A&T (2-0) due to weather over the last weekend.
In CAA play, the Hawks' ERA sits at 8.60 while the offense is hitting .229.

Charleston and Monmouth meet for the first time this weekend. The Hawks are the third opponent Charleston faces for the first time this season joining Air Force (W, 14-6) and Longwood (W, 7-2; W, 2-1).
Charleston is 5-1 against teams that call the Garden State home with previous meetings against Princeton (4-0) and Seton Hall (1-1).
