CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston baseball plays host to the Penn Quakers this weekend for a four game series. The two teams will open the weekend at 4:00 p.m. on Friday before a double-header on Saturday and finale on Sunday. The two programs met for the first time in 2022 with Penn sweeping a two-game set in Charleston.
The Cougars got back to winning ways in the midweek with an 8-2 victory over Liberty to move to 8-3 on the season. Penn is on the final leg of a three-team trip inside the Palmetto State after taking on USC-Upstate and Charleston Southern earlier this week.
Last Time Out
The Cougars bounced back in the midweek after getting swept by visiting Nebraska last weekend. Liberty took a 1-0 in the first inning before the Cougars got the bats going in the second. A four-run rally was capped off by a two-RBI single by Cole Mathis. Cougars pitching held Liberty to just one run the rest of the way as Andrew Duval and Alex Lyon each threw three innings in relief. Leading 4-2 in the 8th, Charleston got some insurance runs with another four-run rally. Two runs came via wild pitches before Dylan Johnson and Dariyan Pendergrass each picked up an RBI. With the six-run cushion in the 9th, Lyon closed it out for a three inning save which allowed Duval picked up his first win of the season.
Scouting the Quakers
Penn comes into the weekend with a 3-6 record. The Quakers opened up the season dropping three of four at Abilene Christian before heading to Upstate where the dropped two of three. During the week, Penn played a two game set with Charleston Southern, splitting the pair.
Last season, Penn took the Ivy League Tournament Crown to earn the program's sixth bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Quakers almost pulled of a shocker by starting 2-0 in the Auburn Regional, taking down the host Tigers and Samford. Matched up with Southern Mississippi in the regional final, Penn could not get past the Golden Eagles, dropping back-to-back games.
With a lot of production back from the 2023 season, the Quakers were named a unanimous number one in the Ivy League preseason poll, picking up all 16 first place votes. Led by reigning Ivy League Coach of the Year John Yurkow, Penn returns the 2023 Ivy League Pitcher of the Year, Ryan Dromboski and six All-Ivy picks: Dromboski (first team), Wyatt Henseler (first), Cole Zaffiro (first), Davis Baker (second), Carson Ozmer (HM) and Jarrett Pokrovsky (HM).
