Hunter Spins Gem in Shutout of William & Mary

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Aidan Hunter spun eight innings of dazzling baseball to lead College of Charleston to a series win over William & Mary by a score of 4-0 on Saturday at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (27-10, 11-3 CAA) extended their winning streak to seven and won for the 10th time in their past 11 conference games. William & Mary lost its first CAA series of the season and dropped to 25-14 and 8-6.
Charleston improved to 20-8 at home, reaching the 20-win plateau for the 19th time in 23 full seasons at Patriots Point. The Cougars are also one win shy of hitting the 1,100 mark since the program resumed in 1991.
Hunter allowed only three hits and struck out seven to win for the fifth time in six decisions this year. He began the game with a flourish, striking out the side in the first and inducing a pair of double plays after the Tribe put the leadoff batter on in the third and sixth.
Davis Aiken completed Charleston's league-leading fifth shutout of the year with a hitless ninth. The Cougars have won 13 of the past 14 matchups with William & Mary.
Charleston got Hunter the only runs he needed in the first on an RBI double by Cole Singsank and run-scoring single by Luke Wood. Zeroes dominated the scoreboard until the eighth when Will Baumhofer singled in Cole Mathis, and a Kevin Madden groundout brought home pinch runner Brent Gibbs.
Madden went 0-for-4 to see his nine-game hitting streak come to an end but he did extend his run of consecutive games with an RBI to eight.
The Cougars go for the sweep tomorrow at noon. The start time was moved up an hour due to the threat of inclement weather later in the afternoon.
