Cougars Sweep Away Tribe and Extend Winning Streak to Eight

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston finished off its third CAA sweep of the season with a 3-0 win over William & Mary on Sunday at Patriots Point, holding the Tribe scoreless over the final 20 innings of the series.
The Cougars (28-10, 12-3) have won eight in a row and 14 of their last 15 overall while also taking 11 of the past 12 in conference play. Charleston remained in a tie for first in the CAA with UNCW after the Seahawks defeated Northeastern on Sunday.
The eight-game winning streak is the longest of the season for the Cougars, who have also enjoyed runs of seven and six games. It was also the 1,100th win since the baseball program was resumed in 1991.
Connor Campbell and Hayden Thomas were the pitching stars for the Cougars, who defeated the Tribe for the 14th time in the past 15 meetings. Campbell scattered three hits and struck out six in six innings to improve to 6-2 on the year.
Thomas entered with two on and two out in the seventh and ended the threat with a strikeout. The freshman lefthander, who earned his first career win on Friday, picked up his initial save when he punched out the side in order in the eighth and worked around a two-out triple in the ninth.
The Cougars wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 lead when Avery Neaves homered with one out in the first. The round tripper was his ninth of the season, moving him into a tie for second on the team with Kevin Madden and one behind Cole Singsank.
Charleston added to its advantage in the second. Will Baumhofer and Madden singled to start the frame, and the duo pulled off a double steal. The William & Mary third baseman misplayed a grounder by Tyler Sorrentino to allow Baumhofer to race across.
Luke Wood singled and scored on a groundout by Dylan Johnson in the sixth to produce an insurance run.
The Cougars play the first of a home-and-home set against The Citadel on Tuesday at Riley Park. Game time is 4 p.m. Charleston returns to CAA play next weekend at Campbell.
