CHARLESTON, S.C. - In celebration of Black History Month, College of Charleston Athletics will honor longtime men's basketball play-by-play announcer Everett German as the 2025 Cougar Trailblazer. German will be honored at the Cougars' men's basketball game on Saturday, February 8 vs. Elon and the Cougars' women's basketball game on Sunday, February 9 vs. Northeastern.
German started with the Charleston Radio Network in 2005 and took over play-by-play duties in 2015. German is one of five black official team play-by-play announcers in Division I men's basketball.*
Â
"It is an honor to be recognized as this year's CofC Trailblazer. This prestigious award ranks high on my career achievement list! Representing The College in various aspects is a privilege that I never take for granted," said German. "Whether it is broadcasting, being a part of a committee, board member on the Charleston Athletic Fund or just giving a helping hand, it is something that I take deep pride in. Over the last 20 years, I've worked with some amazing people at The College and I'm very thankful, humbled and blessed that Charleston gave me the opportunity to do so."
A 1994 graduate of Spartanburg Methodist, Everett has missed just two broadcasts during his twenty years covering Cougar basketball – neither of which came during 2011 after a kidney transplant and dialysis.
He has been on the call for three CAA Championships and three March Madness contests, the voice so many think of when they think of Charleston men's basketball.
Â
"When I think about what Charleston basketball sounds like, I hear Everett's voice," said former Cougar great Joe Chealey. "Nothing felt more "big time" than doing post-game interviews with him and Coach Kresse."
German was voted as the Voice of the Year by the Post & Courier in 2019 and completed two separate stints on the board of the Charleston Athletic Fund for a total of eight years.
Born and raised in Mount Pleasant, Everett has worked as an account executive for twenty years and is the founder of the Charleston Area Kidney Walk. He is the first cousin of former Trailblazer honoree Otto German.
Â
"Everett's positive impact to the school, community, and those around him is apparent. I personally appreciate all he does for CofC and for my family," said former Cougar great Dalton Bolon. "Thank you for what you do and who you are!"
