MT PLEASANT, S.C. – Junior
Jake Brink tossed back-to-back complete games as College of Charleston baseball beat Delaware, 12-0, in seven innings Friday evening at Patriots Point.
The Cougars earned their 20th victory of the season, improving to 20-12 overall and 6-4 in the CAA. Delaware slips to 17-15 and 5-5 in league play.
Brink fanned a career-high nine batters in his fifth victory of the season, throwing 87 pitches and 59 for strikes. Offensively, Charleston scored in every inning while freshman
Landon Penfield finished the night a single shy of the cycle, completing his six RBI day with a three-run shot in the sixth to give the Cougars a dozen runs.
CRITICAL POINTS AGAINST DELAWARE:
- After Brink set Delaware down in order to begin the game, Charleston jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the home half of the frame.
- Penfield launched a two-run double before later scoring on freshman Alex LaCoste's RBI groundout.
- CofC added to its lead with back-to-back extra base hits by Penfield and senior Dylan Johnson.
- Leading 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth, senior Ben Venables hit a bloop single into right that plated two more runs for the Cougars.
- Graduate Will Baumhofer sliced an RBI double down the left field line in the fifth before Penfield's three-run shot in the sixth put the run rule into effect.
- Brink faced four above the minimum Friday, allowing two runs and two walks in the scoreless outing.
- In the top of the seventh, the righty punched out the first two batters before getting the last batter to fly out to right to secure the complete game shutout.
OF NOTE:
- Charleston is 24-10 in the all-time series against Delaware and 17-2 at home.
- Brink is the first Cougar pitcher to throw back-to-back complete games since Bailey Ober achieved the feat in 2016.
- Brink is also the first CofC hurler to toss a complete game shutout since Evan Sisk on March 16, 2018, against Kansas State.
- Senior Dariyan Pendergrass swiped his 27th base of the season in the sixth, putting him one bag shy of entering the top 10 in program history for a single season.
- Johnson extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his double in the second.
- Venables recorded his second straight two-hit performance on Friday, finishing the game 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in.
- Graduate Avery Neaves, Pendergrass and Penfield combined to score eight of the 12 runs.
- Pendergrass has scored in 13 of the last 14 games, totaling 23 runs. The senior has crossed the plate multiple times in seven of those contests.
- Charleston improves to 8-0 this season and 104-8 overall under head coach Chad Holbrook when allowing two-or-fewer runs.
- The Cougars drew nine walks in the win, the 23rd time this season drawing at least five free passes.
- CofC's pitching staff has a 3.35 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in the month of April, striking out 41 batters in 51 innings while allowing just 12 walks.
