
Frail, Staff Shutout Spartans for Sixth Straight Win

MT PLEASANT, S.C. – Junior Conner Frail tossed 6.1 scoreless innings as College of Charleston baseball shutout USC Upstate, 6-0, Tuesday evening at Patriots Point.
The Cougars have won six straight ballgames, improving to 17-19 overall. With the loss, the Spartans even to 19-19.

CRITICAL POINTS AGAINST USC UPSTATE:
- A pitcher's duel through the first five and a half innings, Charleston broke the scoreless contest with three in the home half of the fifth.
- Redshirt junior Braeden Smith drove in sophomore Landon Penfield, who opened the inning with a single to right.
- Smith later came around to score on graduate Reece Holbrook's ground-rule double. An RBI groundout from freshman Jake Amman capped off the inning.
- Graduate Will Tippett added to the lead in the seventh with a two-run shot to left that went 341 feet.
- Penfield capped off his two-hit day with an RBI single in the eighth to bring home sophomore Alex LaCoste.
- Frail didn't allow a run in his first Division I victory, striking out three Spartans.
- Sophomore Parker Sweeney tossed 2.1 perfect innings before graduate Davis Aiken recorded the final out of the night to seal the win.
OF NOTE:
- Charleston is now 9-5 versus USC Upstate and 6-3 at home. Tuesday was also the third shutout victory in the series for the Cougars.
- CofC shutout its first opponent of the season and first shutout since beating William & Mary 12-0 in seven innings in the 2025 CAA Championship.
- The Cougars improve to 5-1 on Tuesdays in 2026 and are 20-5 on Tuesdays the last three seasons.
- Tuesday marks the second straight season Charleston has swept North Carolina A&T before defeating USC Upstate the very next game.
- LaCoste has a base hit in 21 of the last 22 contests and has eight multi-hit performances in that span.
- During the six-game winning streak, Charleston has outscored its opponents 40-23 and have a 3.00 ERA with 54 strikeouts in 54.0 innings.
- In the span, Sweeney has appeared in three contests, tossing 8.0 scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts. The southpaw has yielded just four hits, three walks and an unearned run, while opponents have hit .148.
- Charleston's pitching staff allowed just one walk Tuesday, the eighth contest in 2026 where it's yielded one or zero walks.
