
Charleston Defeats Coastal Carolina 3-0 in Non-Conference Action

Led by Cole Dawley and Deanna Patrick with 11 kills each, the College of Charleston volleyball team downed Coastal Carolina 3-0 (30-20, 30-26, 30-12) in the second meeting between the two teams this season. Coastal Carolina won the first match 3-1.
“This was a great way to finish our four-match home stand,” Head Coach Jason Kepner said. “We have won 12 straight games and played some great volleyball. Now we have to take it on the road and get focused for two more conference matches this weekend. Tonight was a great blocking night, averaging almost six blocks a game is something that you don't do very often. I was very happy with our aggressive blocking tonight.”
With the win, CofC improved to 15-6 overall with 11 shutouts. Coastal Carolina falls to 11-12 with the loss.
Charleston answered Coastal Carolina's two opening points with a 4-0 run to take a 3-2 lead. CCU tied the game at three before Charleston took the lead and kept it for the remainder of the game. With Emily Sawin serving and owning a 13-9 lead, CofC scored eight consecutive points to take a 21-9 lead. Coastal went on a 7-0 run to narrow Charleston?s lead to 22-17. CofC scored the next two points and forced Coastal to take a timeout. The Cougars scored six of the final seven points to clinch game one 30-20.
After CCU tied game two at three, Charleston went on a 6-0 run to open a 9-3 lead. The Chanticleers chipped away at the Cougar lead on 11 possessions to narrow the Cougar lead to three at 19-16. The Chanticleers scored five consecutive points to tie the game at 22. With Charleston holding a 25-23 advantage, Coastal took their first timeout. Four plays later they took their final timeout at the 28-24 mark. A Dawley kill sealed game two for the Cougars, 30-26.
CofC took game three 30-12 in dominating fashion, scoring 23 of the first 28 points. With a 23-5 lead, Coastal Carolina used their second timeout. The team regrouped and scored on consecutive possessions, making the score 23-7. The team traded points on the next two possessions before Charleston scored five unanswered points. Sawin notched a kill to win the game and the match.
Along with the 11-kill efforts by Dawley and Patrick, Tiffany Blum added another double-digit kill performance with 10. Blum also tied her season best with 12 blocks (1 solo, 11 assisted). Paced by Lindsey Kane who recorded 35 assists, Sawin added eight kills while Annie Uthe, Kane, and Whitney Russell combined for 14 kills.
Megan Parkerson tallied 11 digs, while Dawley added 10 digs, for a double-double performance. Nine Cougars recorded a dig for a 50-dig team performance. Sawin, Uthe, Kane, Dawley, Patrick, and Russell each notched at least one block for a team total of 17.5.
Jill Nyhoff led the Chanticleers with 10 kills, while Chelsy Kimes added 9 kills on the night. Six additional players were in on the offensive effort by combining for 17 kills. Meagan Tracey paced the team with 27 assists, while Megan Bickford and Kimes recorded one service ace a piece.
Defensively, Bickford led Coastal Carolina with five blocks (one solo, four assisted). The team tallied seven total blocks. Brett Starbuck paced the defense with 10 digs while eight Chanticleers recorded at least one dig each.
CofC takes its winning ways on the road this week when it travel to North Carolina to face Elon Friday, Oct. 19 for a 7 p.m. match and UNC Greensboro Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m.
