
Cougars Fall to Elon in DH Sweep

Elon took both ends of a softball doubleheader -- 4-2 in extra-innings and 6-2 -- from the College of Charleston at Patriots Point Field on Saturday afternoon in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., to open up Southern Conference play.
Elon and the College of Charleston will wrap up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Phoenix (17-14, 2-0 SoCon) got on the board in the first inninng of Game 1 on Melanie Heltbran's two-out RBI-single to score Tracey Dahlen. Both teams remained scoreless through 3 1/2 innings before Elon's Paige Goss scored on Dahlen's RBI-double.
The College of Charleston answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot the game, 2-2. Terri Mesko's sac fly to centerfield scored Brittany Small, and Kolby Schooley scored on a wild pitch.
Brandi Jones' one-out two-RBI double to left field scored Ashlee Crews and Debbie Zeigler to seal the win for Elon.
Helterbran improved to 9-4 on the season. She gave up five hits, struck out five and walked one in 10 innings of work. Terri Mesko (7-6) gave up eight hits and four runs for the loss. She struck out nine and walked six in 10 innings of work.
Goss led the offense for Elon on 2-for-3 hitting, followed by Laurin Smith who was 2-for-5. Dahlen, Helterbran, Zeigler and Jones each had a hit.
Jennifer Golden, who went 2-for-4, led the Cougars. Izmena Cabrera, Shannon Howard and Katie Pesature each had a hit.
In Game 2, the Cougars (14-16, 0-2 SoCon) tallied a run each in the first and second innings. Amber Shifflett scored on an errant throw by Elon's Goss, after Kristie Shifflett's RBI-single. Small's RBI-single through the left side scored Shannon Howard for the 2-0 Charleston lead in the bottom of the second.
Charleston would see its lead vanish as Elon added a pair of runs to tie the game 2-all in the top of the third as Dahlen stole third and reached home on a throwing miscue from Small. Jaimie Rao's RBI-single up the middle plated Zeigler.
The Phoenix would add another run in the sixth as Patti Weber scored on Ziegler's RBI-single, before Elon added three runs in the seventh on three errors by K. Shifflett.
Carol Lilley (7-7) gave up seven hits and two runs for the Elon win. She walked one and stuck out two. Katie Snasouci fell to 4-3 on the season. She gave five hits, four runs and struck in three in 3 1/3 innings of work.
Zeigler, Jones and Rao were 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Phoenix offense. Goss, Dahlen, Smith, Weber and Jaymie Shanahan each had a hit.
Howard, who was 2-for-3 at the plate, led the Charleston offense. A. Shifflett, K. Shifflett, Golden, Small and Darla Roberson each had a hit.
