Palo Alto, Calif. -- Ninth-ranked Stanford downed the College of Charleston softball team 9-1 in five innings in game three of the Stanford Classic Friday afternoon.

With the loss, Charleston falls to 9-15, while the Cardinal impofve to 23-2 on the year.

After four innings and seven runs by Stanford and zero from CofC, Shannon Howard belted a two-out homer to deep left field to put the Cougars on the board. Howard's homer was her second of the season. The Carmichael, Calif., native went 1-for-2 in the effort.

Freshman Linzi Bereitschaft hit two singles to bring the CofC hit total to three. The first baseman finished 2-for-2 and helped the Charleston defense with six put-outs.

Alexa Datko (1-2) had her first start for the Cougars. The freshman from San Diego, Calif., pitched through four innings striking out one Cardinal batter and allowing five runs.

CofC returns to action Saturday, March 8, when it takes on North Dakota State at noon and Texas Tech at 6 p.m.
