
Cougars Escape with 54-51 Victory Over Spartans

The Cougars (13-6, 8-3 SoCon) led by as much as 12 points in the second half before the Spartans crept back into competition. UNCG (7-12, 4-7 SoCon) went on a 10-1 run in the final two minutes of the half, nailing three consecutive baskets from beyond the arc.
Up two points with just 27 seconds on the clock, Greensboro's Sarah Folwell fouls junior Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla./Spruce Creek), sending her to the line for two shots. Gerty made one-of-two from the stripe, extending the lead to three. The Spartans fired off three treys in the final 15 seconds of the game, but couldn't connect to send the game into overtime. The Cougars left Greensboro with their sixth conference victory on the road.
Senior center Deidra Jones (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork) scored a team-high 13 points while senior guard Jade Hughes (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) and Gerty registered double-digit scoring figures with 10 points apiece. Seven different CofC players scored in the game.
Jones also led the team with a game-high 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the year and seventh of her career. Senior forward Brooke Kotcella (Anderson, S.C./Wren) added 10 boards as the team pulled down 47 rebounds on the afternoon; 18 more than the Spartans. Jones had a career day from in free throws, going 9-of-13 from the line.
Spartans guard Lakiah Hyson led Greensboro with 23 points over 33 minutes of action. The senior scored the first nine points for UNCG, and was the only scorer for the Spartans until the 10:46 mark in the first half.
College of Charleston is back in action on Monday evening when they visit Elon for a 7 p.m. game against the Phoenix.
