ATLANTA, Ga. – Following a strong opening weekend to their spring season a week ago, the College of Charleston volleyball program built on that success with an impressive 3-1 performance at the Atlanta Collegiate Invitational on Sunday, April 4.
“I am very pleased with the team's overall performance this weekend” said head coach Jason Kepner. “We were a little up and down at times but showed that we can play at a very high level and will continue to work on maintaining that high level for longer periods of time”.
The Cougars did maintain that high level of play throughout the weekend as they notched three sweeps in their four matches and dropped their lone match to a Southeastern Conference foe.
CofC opened play by handling South Alabama by 25-17 and 25-19 scores before falling to Auburn. The Tigers took the first set by a score of 25-23 before the Cougars evened the match at 1-1 with an impressive 25-14 decision in Game 2. Auburn then outlasted CofC for a 15-7 victory in the deciding set.
Following that loss, the College of Charleston responded with a strong win over Jacksonville State, a 2009 NCAA Tournament team. JSU went 27-8 last season and not only made the tournament but won a match, defeating Florida A&M University. This past weekend though, CofC earned 25-22 and 25-18 victories over the Gamecocks for a 2-0 win. In their final match of the weekend, the Cougars then defeated a much improved Kennesaw State team by identical 25-23 scores to finish with a 3-1 record.
“After losing a tough match against Auburn, I was very proud of how this team responded by beating an NCAA tournament team in Jacksonville State” added Kepner. “Overall it was another good weekend and I look forward to getting back in the gym with this team”.
The Cougars continue their spring season this coming weekend when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for their most challenging competition yet. They will compete in the Carolina Volleyball Spring Tournament on Saturday, April 10 and face the likes of Duke, North Carolina, Virginia Commonwealth and fellow Southern Conference member Furman. That tournament will kick off at 9 a.m. against the Blue Devils.
