MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston softball team dropped their CofC Invitational opener Friday night to the Wisconsin Badgers 7-2.
“We didn't attack up at the plate very much and that's very disappointing. We let her get a hit, we let her throw strikes, we let her own the strike zone,” CofC Head Coach Linda Kalafatis said about Wisconsin pitcher Taylor-Paige Stewart.
Junior Carly Hansis and Freshmen Sara Garcia each contributed an RBI in the loss. Sophomore Brianna Davis drew three walks and Taylor DuPree received two free passes.
The Cougars could never get the hit it desperately needed, going 2-9 with runners in scoring position and stranding nine on base.
“It's hard to score runs when you're constantly behind in the count and she obviously has some really good pitches, CofC Head Coach Linda Kalafatis said. “When you face those kinds of pitchers you have to attack, you cannot let them own the strike zone.”
Taylor-Paige Stewart pitched a complete game in the circle, striking out five and continually neutralizing the Cougar offense at opportune times. The Badgers had a well balanced attack on offense with five batters contributing an RBI and Katie Christner chipping in two herself.
“I thought our defense played pretty well. Despite our pitchers having nine strikeouts, we gave up six walks and that's very uncharacteristic of us, explained Kalafatis. That was disappointing because three of those walks scored. Wisconsin creates havoc on the base paths and they did that so we need to do a better job of not giving the other team free runners.“
The Cougars will be back in action Saturday, March 14, 2015 facing off against New Mexico at 3:30 p.m and Memphis in the nightcap at 8:00 p.m.
