MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston baseball took both ends of a doubleheader from Towson, 6-4 and 12-9, to cap a Colonial Athletic Association opening series sweep at Patriots Point on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars (14-6 overall, 3-0 CAA) got off to a fast start in conference play with a total of 37 runs on 42 hits in the three-game series.
The Cougars surrendered runs in the first inning of both games Saturday, but resiliently battled back to remain unbeaten in conference play.
Brandon Glazer (4-0) earned the game two-win after coming on in the third inning and pitching 4.2 innings in which he allowed two runs (both unearned) on four hits with a strikeout.
Eric Bauer (3-2) earned the game three win in relief as well, going 3.0 innings and holding the Tigers to one run on three hits.
Blake Butler picked up hits in both games, totaling three on the day with three RBIs and extending his hitting streak to 16 games.
Nick Pappas and Morgan Phillips drove in four RBIs apiece in the doubleheader.
“Offensively we did a nice job this weekend,” said head coach Monte Lee. “We swung the bats well and hit the ball hard, and put up a couple big innings which is always key to our offense and really improves your chances of winning ball games. It's always tough to win two baseball games in one day.
“I think several of our guys threw the ball well today and helped us work past some shaky starts. Defensively we played well; Blake Butler made a number of plays at second base that prevented runs. Overall, I'm satisfied with how we played and that we found a way to win the series.”
The Cougars are slated for two midweek games, a Tuesday game at crosstown rival Charleston Southern and home game against Campbell, who the Cougars beat 10-3 on the road last week. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. for both games.
GAME ONE: Charleston: 6, Towson: 4 (Box Score/Play by Play)
Towson got on the board early in game one of the doubleheader, plating a pair of runs on two hits and punishing a Cougar error with a two-RBI single by Chris Henze.
The Tigers took advantage of a second Cougar error in the third inning and added two more runs on an RBI double by Colin Gimblet and another RBI single by Henze.
The Cougars chipped away in the bottom half of the inning on singles by Ryan Brown and Tommy Richter, followed by an RBI single by Butler and bases-clearing double by Pappas, cutting the score to 4-3.
The Cougars seized the lead in the fifth with a leadoff double by Richter, part of a four-inning sequence which CofC led off with a hit. After a Towson error put runners on the corners, Butler singled to score a run and Morgan Phillips plated another with an RBI sacrifice fly to left.
The Cougars added an insurance run in the eighth when Champ Rowland singled to left center and scored after Brown sent a 2-2 pitch down the line in right for an RBI double
GAME TWO: Charleston: 12, Towson: 9 (Box Score/Play by Play)
The Tigers once again managed a pair of runs in the first inning by taking advantage of a Cougar error and scoring two runs on two hits and a walk.
Charleston's response was immediate, as Brown and Richter led off the bottom of the inning with walks, setting the table for Wise who singled through the left side on an 0-2 count to score Brown. Butler drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases, and Pappas tagged a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left to score Richter easily. With two runners still on, Phillips homered to left on the first pitch he saw to put CofC up 5-2.
Butler led off the third with a solo shot which hooked around the foul pole in left, marking CofC's 18th home run in the last 10 games.
Towson took runs back in the fourth and sixth innings to tie the game at 6-6, but the Cougars blew it open with six runs on three hits and four walks in the seventh inning, highlighted by an RBI double by Pappas and an RBI single by Alex Pastorius before a Towson throwing error plated two runs.
