LOS ANGELES, CALIF. –The College of Charleston softball team wrapped up their west coast swing losing a pair of close games against Utah, 4-1 and 2-1, at Mt. SAC Community College on Tuesday afternoon.
“We played two really good ball games against a 13-4 Utah team. We need to improve on making in-game adjustments but our kids played with a lot of energy and confidence,” explained head coach Linda Kalafatis. “If we keep playing like that and get everyone healthy again, it will be exciting to see how much we can grow as a unit.”
CofC (9-8 overall) scored one run in both contests, each coming from solo home runs by Sara Garcia (3) and Chandler Frisbie (2).
The College will be back in action Friday, March 6 when the Cougars host the Holy City Showdown Tournament that will draw Jacksonville, South Carolina State, Loyola-Chicago, Dartmouth and Liberty.
Game 1: Utah 4, CofC 1
In game one, the Utes got on the board early after a double by Katie Dickman scoredHannah Flippen all the way from first. Dickman would score from second on a single up the middle by Marissa Mendenhall to give Utah a 2-0 lead.
The Cougars would answer in the second inning after Sara Garcia tattooed her third homer of the season over left field to cut the Utah lead 2-1.
The Utes would tack on their last two runs in the third inning after Mendenhall hit a two-run homer giving her three RBI's on the day and a 4-1 lead.
Utah pitcher Katie Donovan threw a complete game allowing only four hits and one run coming off the homer by Garcia.
Game 2: Utah 2, CofC 1
In game two, the margin for error was much smaller. Utah scored both runs off of solo home runs from Flippen and Dickman while CofC scored off of Chandler Frisbie's moon shot off the scoreboard.
The Cougars had a prime opportunity to score in the third inning having bases loaded and 1 out but the Utes converted a crucial double play to end the scoring chance. CofC would strand a total of eight runners on base throughout the contest.
The College received strong pitching efforts from Hope Klicker and Samantha Martin who each pitched three innings and only surrendered one run.
