MT. PLEASANT, S.C. –The College of Charleston softball team defeated South Carolina State, 6-1, behind a complete game by senior Alex Pizzoli.
“I'm very proud of Alex Pizzoli because she's been waiting for an opportunity. For her to get the start, throw a complete game, and really be in true control of her pitches shows the growth that we have seen in her this year,” said head coach Linda Kalafatis.
Pizzoli, making her season debut, struck out three and had no walks in seven innings of work. She retired the Bulldogs in order four of the seven innings.
The Cougars struck early in the first after Rebecca Mueller led the game off with a walk. After stealing second, she scored on a single up the middle by Katie Padilla. Padilla scored the next at bat after Carly Hansis tripled to right center.
Chandler Frisbie's double the next at bat would plate Hansis and give CofC an early 3-0 lead after the first inning.
The Bulldogs manufactured their lone run in the third inning when Jasmine Greer singled up the middle to score Tamaya McQueary, cutting the CofC lead to 3-1.
The College would answer in the bottom half of the inning with three more runs and would never look back. Frisbie would pick up her second RBI of the day on a single through the left side. The Cougars would score their last two runs off of a wild pitch and a sac fly by Valerie Cassell, stretching the lead to 6-1.
Frisbie paced The College going 2-for-3 with two RBI's. Padilla and Hansis each scored two runs.
The Cougars will be back in double-header action Wednesday, March 11 against Youngstown State before hosting the CofC Invitational March 13-15.
