MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston Softball team defeated Virginia Tech twice, 4-2 and 4-1, on Wednesday in their first mid-week double header of the season.
The Cougars (12-8) played two thrilling games against Virginia Tech (6-14) that came down to the wire. The Cougars trailed the Hokies early in both games, but late rallies allowed Charleston to secure two big wins. Four Cougars recorded at least three hits, and as a team, The College drew eight walks.
“We played some of our most complete softball games tonight, and really showed what we can do when we play to our ability.” Head coach Linda Kalafatis said. “Being able to get crucial hits when we needed them is huge, and that is what separates the great teams from the good ones.”
Game One: Charleston 4, Virginia Tech, 2
Virginia Tech scored the first run of the game in the second inning, earning a 1-0 lead that held until the bottom of the fifth inning. Valerie Cassell got the Cougars on the board with a one-run double that brought home Taylor DuPree and advanced Rebecca Mueller to third base. Mueller would score in the next at-bat after a Hokie wild pitch allowed her to advance home, and give Charleston a lead that they would hold on to for the rest of the game.
Taylor DuPree added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a deep base hit that brought home Katie Padilla and Dana Horgan, giving DuPree her team-leading second hit and two RBI. The Cougars recorded eight hits total against Virginia Tech in the first game, and drew a base on balls four times.
Sydney Shipley made her eighth start of the season, and preformed admirably for The College. She pitched six complete innings, and allowed only two hits and two earned runs, while striking out three Hokie batters. Samantha Martin came in in the seventh inning to close the game for Charleston, and earned her first save of the season.
Game Two: Charleston 4, Virginia Tech 1
The second game of the day played out very similarly to the first game, as Virginia Tech took the lead early with a home run in the very first at bat of the game. The Hokies would only record one more hit the rest of the game. Samantha Martin pitched her seventh complete game of the season, allowing only two hits and no walks.
Madison Brown played a huge game in the twilight edition of this matchup, recording the game tying, and game winning RBI on two separate doubles in the fourth and sixth innings. The Cougars recorded one run in the fourth, and three runs in the bottom of the sixth. In total, Charleston recorded seven hits, four walks and struck out only four times.
