MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston Softball team upset No. 10 ranked Georgia on Friday night by a score of 2-1 on the first day of the Holy City Showdown on the softball field at Patriots Point.
This win is the College's third win against a top-25 ranked team in program history, and their first win over a top-25 ranked team since they defeated No. 7 ranked Tennessee back in 2013. The Cougars (13-8) faced a tough Georgia (20-3) team that had won eight of their last nine games.
Junior pitcher Samantha Martin threw a complete game against the Bulldogs, allowing only one run on eight hits while striking out three batters, and she earned her seventh win of the season. The game was all-the-more special for Martin because her brother, Phillip, who serves in the United State Navy surprised her just hours before the first pitch.
“We play some really tough teams in our conference, so being able to come out here and get a win against a highly regarded team like [Georgia] really shows the talent this team has, and how we stack up against top competition” Martin said. “It was very special to be able to see [her brother, Phillip] and also win one of the biggest games of my career; it's something I will never forget.”
It was an incredible night for the Cougars as they held the Bulldogs to only seven hits, and one solo home run in the fourth inning, through the entire contest. Charleston took the lead with two runs in the first inning after Rebecca Mueller hit a single that brought home Taylor DuPree, and a throwing error by Georgia allowed Kelly Sinclair to advance home as well.
The College recorded six hits and two walks, including a triple off of the bat of Sara Garcia, but were unable to bring any of those base runners home. They left seven runners stranded, and struck out a season-high 12 times against the Bulldogs.
