MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston softball team dropped a tight 2-1 decision against former SoCon rival Chattanooga on day two of the Holy City Showdown at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (13-9) entered the contest on a four-game winning streak and hot off a 2-1 victory over No. 10 ranked Georgia on Friday night, and while the score looked similar, Charleston found themselves on the wrong side of the score against the Mocs (13-9).
The Cougars scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning on a Valerie Cassell double that brought home Rebecca Mueller. The RBI was Cassell's 16th of the season, good for second on the team. From there, a pitchers duel ensued that saw the Cougars manage only five hits total. One of those hits came off the bat of freshman Kelly Sinclair, who has recorded at least one hit in each of the last 10 games for The College.
The two Chattanooga runs were scored in the fourth inning after a single base hit turned into two bases because of a throwing error and brought home a run, and then another base hit brought home another runner. Only one of the runs was earned, as Sydney Shipley started and threw her third complete game of the season, giving up only the one earned run while striking out three batters.
