MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston softball team fought back from a 2-0 deficit in the third inning and scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat UConn, 3-2, in the opening contest of the CofC Invitational on Thursday.
“I like the way we battled today.” Head coach Linda Kalafatis said. “We loaded the bases three times today, and to [UConn's] credit, they prevented us from capitalizing for most of the game, but made plays when we needed too and that is what good teams do.”
This is the second time in the past three games that The College (16-10) has tied or won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. They defeated Buffalo, 3-2, in 10 innings on Tuesday after tying the game in the bottom of the seventh.
The Cougars scored the tying run in the seventh after an error by the Huskies' second basemen allowed Madison Brown to advance from second to home, and the winning run came two batters later on a bases-loaded walk-off wild pitch that allowed Taylor DuPree to cross the plate.
Charleston loaded the bases twice before the seventh inning, and only brought one runner home after a base hit off of the bat of Katie Padilla brought Kelly Sinclair home in the bottom of the fourth inning. Padilla, Sinclair and Rebecca Mueller each recorded two hits for The College against UConn. This was Mueller's 14th game of the season with more than one hit.
The real highlight of the day was the Cougar defense that allowed only two runs in the top of the third, and nothing more. The Huskies only managed four hits off of the starting pitcher Samantha Martin (10-4) who threw her 10th complete game with a season-low zero strikeouts, although she did not walk any batters either.
