MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Katie Padilla hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the College of Charleston softball team a 2-1 lead, powering it towards a victory over Eastern Michigan on Saturday at the CofC Invitational.
“[Padilla] definitely made up for [being picked off in the bottom of the second], I was not very happy with her after that play, but she came through in the clutch for us, like she has all season, so I couldn't be too mad.” Head coach Linda Kalafatis said.
Padilla recorded two hits, including the game-deciding two run blast in the fifth, but was also picked off at second base in the bottom of the second. The home run was her first of the season, and the second home run in her career at CofC. The College is now 17-10 on the season, and has won its last four straight games.
Junior pitcher Sydney Shipley got the start on the mound for the Cougars against Eastern Michigan, and picked up her fifth win of the season after throwing a gem of a game. She pitched a seven inning complete game and struck out three. The only run she allowed came in the top of the third inning on an RBI single that brought home a runner from second.
The College played well offensively, but were unable to take advantage of runners in scoring position, leaving runners on second and third twice on the day, and leaving a total of nine batters on base. Seven Cougars recorded at least one hit against the Eagles, and as a team they only struck out one time. Senior Carly Hansis was responsible for one of those hits, extending her streak of reaching base to 14 consecutive games.
