MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston closed out the CofC Invitational in dominate fashion with two shutout victories over Brown, 8-0 in five innings, and Central Connecticut State, 7-0 in six innings, on Sunday.
The Cougars (19-10) have now won their last six consecutive games by a combined score of 28 runs to six. They are now 12-3 at home in 2016.
Valerie Cassell racked up a season-high five RBI after hitting two doubles and walking once, and Rebecca Mueller and Taylor DuPree each recorded three hits and a walk. As a team, Charleston blasted seven extra base hits and 16 hits total in the two games combined. The College's pitching staff proved to be overwhelming as well, as Samantha Martin, Sydney Shipley and Brittany Violette combined for 10 strikeouts, and only allowed eight hits over 11 scoreless innings.
Game 1: Charleston 8, Brown 0
CofC came out with a clear goal of putting runs on the board, and they accomplished that by putting two runs up in the first, and another three runs in both the second and third innings. Rebecca Mueller recorded a season high three hits that drove in two runs, and Taylor DuPree recorded two hits and crossed home three times against the Bears.
Brown only managed to get two runners on base against the Cougars, as Samantha Martin and Brittany Violette combined for a one hit, one walk, outing. Martin stuck out three over the first four innings, and Violette came in to relieve her in the fifth, and added two strikeouts of her own.
The game ended as a run-ruled contest after four and a half innings.
Game 2: Charleston 7, Central Connecticut 0
With an abundance of confidence and momentum, the Cougars took on Central Connecticut in the final game of the CofC invitational. Sydney Shipley started on the mound for CofC, and pitched a lights-out performance. She threw five scoreless innings and struck out four while only allowing five hits and a walk. Brittany Violette threw the final innings work, and struck out one.
The Cougar offense scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning, taking a lead that they would never be in danger of losing. Seven Cougars recorded a hit against the Blue Devils, including a perfect 2-2 batting performance from Jordin Jones. CofC also drew six walks, and only struck out three times as a team.
The game ended after five and a half innings due to a drop-dead time limit placed because of travel timing.
Who's Up Next
Charleston will take a few days to rest and recover before traveling north to Delaware to open up conference play on Friday, March 25 with a single game, and then a double header on Saturday, March 26. The College was predicted to finish third in the conference in a pre-season poll, and currently hold the fourth best record in the Colonial Athletic Association.
