NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston softball team recorded five hits and drew six walks en route to a 6-1 victory over cross-town combatant Charleston Southern on Tuesday.
The College (22-11) has now won its last three games in a row, and has defeated Charleston Southern (15-19) each of the last seven times that they have played.
“We are from the same town, and we take this game pretty seriously” head coach Linda Kalafatis said, “You can see the same pitch 10 times, and 10 different things can happen, so even though we see [Charleston Southern] a lot, we have to be prepared for everything with them.”
Taylor DuPree reached base three times for Charleston on two walks and one hit, and also scored two of the team's runs. Carly Hansis drove in two runs in the top of the fifth inning, and Jordin Jones lead all batters with two hits on the day. The College added one double off the bat of Katie Padilla, but still fell short of their 1.81 doubles per game average, which is good for seventh in the NCAA.
Sydney Shipley got the start on the mound, tossing three complete innings and picked up the win. Valerie Cassell pitched three innings as well and struck out five batters. Brittany Violette made her seventh appearance of the season, tossing the seventh inning for CofC, where she struck out one batter.
