ELON, N.C. – The College of Charleston softball team dropped each of its two games against CAA rival, Elon, on Saturday by scores of 5-1, and 4-3.
“This is not who we are as a team.” Head coach Linda Kalafatis said. “We were disappointing behind the plate, and we simply didn't make use of our at bats.”
The Cougars (22-13, 2-3) came into the double header with a three game winning streak in hand, and had won eight of their last 10. The College couldn't maintain that momentum though, recording a total of seven hits between the two games and as a team, the Cougars drew nine walks on Saturday.
Game 1: Elon 5, Charleston 1
The Cougars struggled offensively against the Phoenix in the first game of the day, as they only recorded one hit through seven innings of play. They did reach base four additional times though, with two walks and two Elon errors.
Taylor DuPree drove home the College's only run of the game in the top of the third inning on a sacrifice fly-out to right field that allowed Sara Garcia to score from third. Rebecca Mueller recorded CofC's only hit in the top of the sixth inning.
Sydney Shipley got the start on the mound, and pitched 5.1 innings while allowing only three earned runs. She picked up the loss, which was her fifth of the season. Valerie Cassell came in in relief in the bottom of the sixth, and pitched the final two-thirds on an inning, striking out one and allowing no hits or walks.
Game 2: Elon 4, Charleston 3
The second game of the day proved to be just as challenging as the first. Elon scored the first four runs of the game, leading 4-0 before The College woke up offensively in the fifth inning, scoring its first run of the game. Charleston would score two more runs in the top of the sixth, but left the bases loaded still one run behind, and could not make up the deficit.
Taylor DuPree recorded two hits, one of which being a lead off triple in the first at-bat of the game. The Cougars drew six walks total, including two from Kashmir Huckaby. Katie Padilla extended her on-base streak to 13 games after successfully reaching in both contests against Elon.
Samantha Martin started on the mound, but would only manage to go three innings before being supplanted by Valerie Cassell in the fourth inning. Martin gave up nine hits, and a walk, while allowing four earned runs. Cassell tossed the final three innings, and struck out two while allowing only two hits and no runs.
