MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Samantha Martin tossed 3.2 scoreless innings of relief work, as The College of Charleston softball team dropped its series finale against No. 7 ranked James Madison, 5-1, on Sunday at Patriots Point.
“You have to take your hat off to [James Madison]” Head coach Linda Kalafatis said. “I thought our defense was solid again today, but when you don't hit well, it's hard to win, especially against a team as talented as they are.”
Valerie Cassell recorded the College's only RBI of the day in the bottom of the first inning, when she hit a single that allowed Taylor DuPree to score from second base. Four different Cougars recorded hits on the day, and they struck out only three times, but as a team they struggled to consistently produce offense.
Defensively, Charleston was made things tough for the Dukes for much of the game, forcing four three-up three-down innings after a tough first inning to start the game. Sydney Shipley started on the mound, and gave up two runs before being supplanted by Valerie Cassell. Cassell would go on to toss 3.1 innings, and struck out four Duke batters before being relieved by Samantha Martin in the fourth inning. Martin allowed only one hit, and struck out three in her 3.2 innings of work.
The College's record drops to 23-18, and 3-6 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the loss. James Madison continued to show why it's a top rated team in the country, as they swept Charleston over the weekend, and now stand at 9-0 in CAA play, and 34-3 overall on the season.
