WILMINGTON, N.C.– Rebecca Mueller lead all batters with four hits and three runs scored on the day, as the College of Charleston softball team split its Saturday double-header with UNC Wilmington, winning the first game 6-2, and losing the second, 2-1.
The Cougars (24-18, 4-7) dominated for much of the day, as they out hit the Seahawks (23-18, 3-7) in both games, and Sydney Shipley had thrown a no-hitter heading into the seventh inning of the second game. Unfortunately, The College gave up three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game, surrendering its 1-0 lead, and the sweep, in the process.
“I thought we lacked consistency today. We played well defensively, but we didn't put together hits like we needed too.” Head Coach Linda Kalafatis said. “We know what we need to do, and I hope that we just put it all together tomorrow and take the series.”
Game 1: Charleston 6, UNCW 2
The Cougars came out swinging, with every CofC batter being able to reach base safely at least once in the game. Rebecca Mueller and Carly Hansis each recorded two hits, Taylor DuPree and Sara Garcia each drew two walks, and Jordin Jones hit a three-run homer to give The College the lead in the top of the third inning.
Samantha Martin got the start on the mound, and threw 3.1 hit-less innings before being relieved in the fourth by Valerie Cassell. Martin allowed four walks, but struck out four as well en route to picking up her 12th win of the season. Cassell threw 3.2 innings, and struck out four while maintaining the Cougar lead.
The Seahawks scored its only runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth, and were held to only four hits total in the contest. They did draw six walks though, and struck out eight times total.
Game 2: UNCW 2, Charleston 1
The second game of the day proved to be a much more defensive battle, as there were only eight hits between both teams in the game. The Cougars were able to produce five hits, and drew three walks, but also left eight batters on base. Rebecca Mueller led all batters with two hits, and also scored Charleston's only run of the game on a double-steal opportunity that they converted.
Sydney Shipley tossed one of her finest games of the season, throwing six complete innings with no hits. She walked two, and struck out two on the day. The wheels came off for Shipley and the Cougars after they allowed three hits in the bottom of the seventh including a walk off double by UNCW that plated its only two runs of the game.
